Hawaii - The Big Island
The "Big Island" holds something sacred to both the history and the future of the Hawaiian Islands. It is the largest of all the islands in the chain, with the least amount of commercial development. Its landscape was formed by one of nature's most powerful forces - volcanic eruption. Kilauea is still one of the world's most active volcanoes, and lights up the sky with her natural lava flow.

Here Kona coffee plantations gently blend with unspoiled beaches. Some of the world's most challenging golf courses will be found on the big island making it Hawaii's golfing capital.

This island was birth place to three of Hawaii's rulers including Kamehameha I, who united all the islands into a single kingdom. It is steeped in culture, historical significance, volcanoes, beaches, rainforests and off-road adventures.

The popular tourist area is the West side of the island, which receives only 9 inches of rainfall per year. This side of the island is home to Kailua-Kona, the Kohala Coast and Waimea - home of the famous Parker Ranch. Here visitors will find luxurious resorts and private getaways, along with 18 dramatically designed golf courses, and ancient petroglyph trails.

Sight-seeing on the Big Island should include:

  • Kilauea Volcano
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
  • Mauna Kea Stargazing Observatory
  • Merrie Monarch Hula Festival
  • Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo
  • Ka Lae, - the southern most point in the United States
  • Parker Ranch
  • Waipi'o Valley
  • Captain Cook Monument
Facts about the Big Island:
  • The island measures 4,048 square miles and is twice the size of all the other islands combined. It was formed by five erupting volcanoes, of which Kilauea is still active.

  • Although Hawaii is the largest island of the chain, it is also the youngest at about only one million years old!
  • There are 13 climactic regions on the earth, and 11 of them can be found on the Island of Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
